PENAMPANG: The Ministry of Education (MOE) will emphasize improving and strengthening the special education program in Sabah, said Chief Minister (Education) Dr. Mohd Radzi Md Jidin (photo).

He said this would include providing the required expertise and a more conducive infrastructure for students with special needs in the state.

The development of special education is one of the key components that should receive special attention in an effort to allow children with special needs the opportunity to receive an education in school, he said.

“Much work remains to be done to improve this program so that these children will eventually become independent and can integrate into normal society.

“This is to ensure that they (students with special needs) can adapt and live comfortably as they grow up,” he told reporters after a Kupi-Kupi meeting with teachers and parents in Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan District (SMK ) Tansau here today.

At the event, Dr. Mohd Radzi also presented a mock check of RM6.6 million as grants for students with special needs in the state to Sabah Director of Education, Dr. Mistirine Radin.

SMK Tansau Principal Rusmadi Ahmad also received a mock check worth RM74,700 as payment for Phase 2 (July – December) assignments for students with special needs at the school.

Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, Rusmadi thanked the Ministry of Education and the Sabah State Department of Education for their concern and the additional allocation of RM200,000 to improve SMK Tansau’s special education classes.

He said the allocation would allow improvement works to continue, adding that previously the school relied on public contributions.

“The school has 80 students with special needs, the largest group in Penampang, so a conducive classroom environment that conforms to established requirements is vital for students,” he said.

The special education program at the school also offers training in skills such as baking and agricultural education. –Named
