PETALING JAYA: Two Sarawak parties on different sides of the political divide have been given the green light to use their respective logos, both with the hornbill, in the upcoming state elections.

According to a report by The Borneo Post, the Electoral Commission has approved the GPS and Parti Bumi Kenyalang logos.

GPS is the ruling coalition and is made up of the former Barisan Nasional parties, while Parti Bumi Kenyalang is an opposition party.

The EC was responding to a question about whether both logos were allowed to appear on the same ballot in an election.

According to the report, there is concern that voters may be confused as both parties used the hornbill, an icon of Sarawak, as the main symbol on their logos.

While both parties use the hornbill symbol, there are differences in its design, the simpler GPS design being the only colors red, black and white.

The Parti Bumi Kenyalang logo is more detailed with the Sarawak outline forming the horn of the hornbill.

Sarawak state elections are due to be called for April 2021.
