High-risk citizens to be excluded

PUTRAJAYA: The government will impose an entry ban on citizens of countries that register more than 150,000 Covid-19 cases starting next Monday, says Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

He said countries on the list include the United States, Brazil, France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Russia and Bangladesh, as well as three previously announced countries, namely India, Indonesia and the Philippines.

“We will add more high-risk countries to the list, which have more than 150,000 positive cases. Its citizens will be banned.

“However, for emergencies or cases involving bilateral relations, such as if a person needs to come for a meeting between countries, we will allow entry. But it requires permission from the Immigration Department, ”he told reporters after chairing the meeting of the Special Committee on the Adopting New Rules Campaign here yesterday.

The Ministry of Health will release details of the countries that have registered more than 150,000 Covid-19 cases later.

Last Tuesday, Ismail Sabri announced an entry ban on long-term pass holders from India, Indonesia and the Philippines starting on September 7 due to an increase in Covid-19 cases in those countries.

The ban involves six categories of pass holders, namely those with permanent resident status (PR), participants of the Malaysia My Second Home Program (MM2H), expatriates, including professional visiting pass holders (PVP), and holders of resident passes.

Spouses of Malaysian citizens and their children, as well as students from the three countries who want to return to Malaysia, are also prohibited.

Meanwhile, Ismail Sabri said the government had no problem allowing Malays from high-risk countries to return home, but they were subjected to the mandatory 14-day quarantine.

On the Adopting New Standards Campaign, he said it would run until December 31 to ensure that people continue to adhere to the standard operating procedure to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said the Health Ministry would announce the details later.

Meanwhile, in a statement issued yesterday, Ismail Sabri said that more than 100 people were arrested in pubs and nightclubs for violating the recovery movement control order (MCO).

It said the 109 people arrested for “pub or nightclub activities” were among the 198 people caught Wednesday.

“On September 2, the police arrested 198 people for violating the MCO. Of that total, 184 people were issued complexes, while another nine are in preventive detention. Five others have been rescued.

“The crimes included activities in pubs or discos, activities with large numbers of people and lack of physical distancing (41), not providing check-in facilities for customers (25), not wearing masks (17), prostitution (two) and non-compliance with quarantine orders (one), ”he said.

A total of 51,809 controls were carried out Wednesday night by 12,567 officers from the task force.

The locations monitored included supermarkets, restaurants, street vendors, factories, banks, government offices, as well as air, land and sea terminals.

Ismail Sabri also said police had erected 63 barricades across the country on Wednesday under “Ops Benteng,” which were aimed at preventing illegal immigrants from entering the country and preventing cross-border crime.
