The Energy Commission is expected to announce the new electricity rates by year-end after obtaining Cabinet agreement.

BANGI: Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) projects slightly lower electricity rates next year following the reduction in the current cost of coal and gas production.

President and CEO Amir Hamzah Azizan said the rates would be up to the Energy Commission (ST), which would do a detailed assessment before proposing it to Cabinet.

“The price of coal is around RM 43 per tonne compared to RM 65 per ton during the same time last year. So there are some savings there, ”he told reporters after the Tenaga Nasional Foundation (YTN) 2020 scholarship award ceremony here today.

However, he said the assessment will also be based on the movement and projection of the price of coal and gas until the end of this year.

“TNB is under the supervision of ST. Under the incentive-based regulation (IBR) scheme, all differences between the price of coal and the price of gas will be included in the Electricity Industry Fund (KWIE) and depends on the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources and ST.

“If we look at what the government has done in March until the end of this year, they have used part of the KWIE funds for discounts (to consumers during the motion control order),” he said.

ST is expected to announce the new electricity rates by the end of the year for the period January to June 2021 after obtaining the agreement of the Cabinet.

Meanwhile, TNB President Mahdzir Khalid said that YTN had received more than 7,700 applications this year for scholarships for study abroad, as well as scholarships to study at Uniten from students who dropped out of SPM 2019 school.

Of the number, only 470 have been shortlisted and called for interviews.

“TNB and YTN aspire to develop students not only as excellent students in academic fields, but also to enhance their leadership talents.

“This is in line with the selection criteria for YTN scholarship recipients, not only based on academic excellence alone, but also on their ability to lead, actively participate in sports, and exude a positive attitude,” he said. .
