Dewan Negara begins today (September 2), to decide on the president

KUALA LUMPUR, September 2 (Bernama) – The Dewan Negara, which is convened on Wednesday (September 2) on the first day of the Second Meeting of the Third Term of the XIV Parliament, will focus on who will be elected the new president of the Senate. .

The appointment of the 18th president of Dewan Negara will replace Tan Sri SA Vigneswaran, who completed his term on June 22.

In accordance with the Senate Rules, the members of the upper house of Parliament, by forming a quorum, will elect a new president when the position becomes vacant.

After the appointment of the president, four new members of the Senate, namely Mohamad Apandi Mohamad, (appointed by the Kelantan State Legislative Assembly), Datuk Seri S. Vell Paari (appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong), Ahmad Yahaya and Datuk Wira Othman Aziz (appointed by the Kedah State Legislative Assembly), is also scheduled to take office.

In accordance with the ongoing recovery movement control order (MCO), the Dewan Negara session, which will last until September 23, will be carried out in accordance with the standard operating procedure established by the government.

The session is expected to debate 10 bills that were approved by Dewan Rakyat.

It includes three bills related to the Covid-19 pandemic, namely, the Bill of Temporary Measures to Reduce the Impact of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19) 2020; the Draft Law on Temporary Measures for Government Financing (Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19)); and the Bill of Insolvency Law (Modification) 2020. – Bernama
