PM: Benefits to be shared equitably

KUALA LUMPUR: More economic stimulus packages will be implemented if needed to help Malaysians.

Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin says that the benefits will be distributed equitably among the people.

“The fruits of our efforts to revive the economy will be shared equally among the people, regardless of their race, religion and social status.

“The principles of the Shared Prosperity Vision 2030 will be the foundation of our policies,” he said.

Muhyiddin said he would present the Bumiputera Agenda as a national agenda and efforts would include the establishment of a Bumiputera Prosperity Council chaired by him.

He also invited experts to share their points of view to carry out the agenda.

There are also plans to digitize the country under the National Digital Network (Jendela) under the 12th Malaysia Plan.

The government will also include food security in its prosperity plan, as the country has the potential to produce food products to feed the people.

“Every year we import food products such as milk and meat worth RM80bil but we have the potential to produce them ourselves.

“But we haven’t fully realized that,” he said.

It renewed the commitments to fight corruption through the National Anticorruption Plan, as well as giving way to institutional reforms to establish a more competent administration.

Muhyiddin also listed work in other areas such as education, health, public safety and racial unity.

On the other hand, Muhyiddin said that the Perikatan Nasional government had not stopped working for the people since taking over the reins of government in March.

Despite Perikatan taking over Putrajaya without a manifesto, Muhyiddin said he kept a promise to care for the rakyat amid the Covid-19 crisis.

He said that just because he didn’t have a manifesto to guide them when they came to power, it didn’t mean that Perikatan could do whatever he wanted.

“Not manifesting does not mean not being accountable.

“As a leader, accountability is important to me and all leaders are responsible for the people they lead,” he said at a convention to mark Perikatan’s six months in power.

He said that the moment the Perikatan government was formed, it began to function as a functional cabinet.

He said he faced his first hurdle with managing the unprecedented Covid-19 crisis without much of a benchmark.

Muhyiddin said that while controlling the spread of the disease, he also had to take care of the well-being of the people.

“Enforcing the motion control order (MCO) was easy, but ensuring economic protection was challenging,” he said.

To counter that, the government launched economic stimulus packages like Penjana to revive the economy amid uncertainties.

“In the six months, we handled the Covid-19 crisis well with high recovery rates and low infection and death rates.

“Our economic sectors have also reopened with more than 15 million workers returning to work,” he said.
