KUCHING (September 1): Non-Sarawakian oil and gas industry workers entering Sarawak will be required to undergo a quarantine starting today, the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said.

It said in a statement that Malays from Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Labuan, as well as non-Malays who check in from their platforms, will be placed in a quarantine center in the state for 14 days.

“An rT-PCR test will be performed on the second and tenth day of quarantine.

“If the test results are negative, they will be allowed to go to the platform,” he said, adding that the cost of the quarantine and rT-PCR tests will be borne by the employer.

For those withdrawing from rigs, SDMC said oil and gas workers from Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Labuan will be placed in the quarantine center and the rT-PCR test will take place on the second day of quarantine.

“If the results are negative, they will be allowed to return and they will not have to complete the remaining days of quarantine,” he said.

He also said that for Sarawak oil and gas workers leaving the rigs, the cost will be borne by the Sarawak government, while non-Sarawak will have to bear the cost themselves.

As for foreign oil and gas workers being fired from outside the country, the committee said they would have to go through the quarantine process as usual.

“Those who say goodbye to Malaysia will be quarantined while awaiting the results of the rT-PCR test.

“They are willing to pay the quarantine and rT-PCR charges,” he said.
