PUTRAJAYA (Bernama): The Ministry of Health already has four months in advance preparing for a possible increase in Covid-19 infections due to winter weather conditions in various other parts of the world.
Health Director General Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said that although the country’s infection rate is now under control, developments in other countries, such as India, South Korea, Japan, Spain and France, where should produce an increase in cases during cold weather conditions, they should be considered.
“Our concern is that there will be an increase in cases during that period and so we have to make preparations,” he told Bernama when he met after attending the 2020 National Day celebrations at Dataran Pahlawan Negara here on Monday (Aug 31). ).
At the same time, Dr. Noor Hisham said that a mutation of the Covid-19 virus has made it more infectious and as such urged people to always be on guard and strictly adhere to standard operating procedures (SOPs).
He said that as there is still no proven vaccine in sight, the ministry will continue to implement control measures.
“Through these measures, people must comply with the SOPs and for our part we prepare in terms of laboratories, clinics and hospitals where, if there is an increase in cases, we could control the situation,” he said.
Through its public health system, Malaysia was able to contain the pandemic through early cluster detection, said Dr. Noor Hisham.
“However, we will still need strong cooperation from the people when it comes to breaking the chain of Covid-19 infection,” he said. – Bernama
