KUALA LUMPUR: Two people from the same household will now be allowed to travel in the same car to buy daily necessities, amid early signs that COVID-19 restrictions are easing in Malaysia.

Chief Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said at a daily press conference on Wednesday (April 29) that they will also be allowed to get their daily needs, medical and health services beyond the travel limit, provided those services are not available within 10 km of your residence.

“The standard operating procedure (SOP) prior to this only allowed one person to travel in the vehicle within a 10km radius, and beyond 10km with the discretion of the police,” he said.

Malaysia is currently enforcing a movement control order (MCO) that restricts domestic and international travel to curb the spread of COVID-19.

The MCO, which went into effect on March 18, has been it was extended three times until May 12. Wednesday marked the start of the fourth phase of MCO.

As of Wednesday, Malaysia recorded a total of 5,945 cases, with 100 deaths. The recovery rate was 68.75 percent.

Attributing the plateau of new infections to the measures of the MCO, the director general of the Ministry of Health, Noor Hisham Abdullah, said that the country is entering the recovery phase.

Starting Monday, students at colleges, who have been confined to their university shelters for more than a month under the MCO, also began to return home in stages.

In the last phase of the MCO, economic sectors that were previously allowed to operate during the first three sentences can operate at full operational capacity, according to an announcement by Prime Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali.

Dr. Noor Hisham said Wednesday that the Health Ministry would monitor the situation for up to four weeks before proposing to reopen the social and educational sectors.

“We suggested and proposed that the economic sectors be reopened first. The social and educational sector will take a while,” he said.
