PETALING JAYA: Malaysia recorded 11 new Covid-19 cases on Saturday (Aug 29), bringing the total number of infections to 9,317 cases.

The Director General of the Ministry of Health, Tan Sri, Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah, said that of the 11 new cases, 10 were imported cases involving six Malays and four non-Malays.

They were from infections that occurred abroad in India, Indonesia and Qatar.

Meanwhile, the only locally transmitted case involved a Malaysian who tested positive for the virus during a pre-surgery examination at Sarawak General Hospital.

“No deaths related to Covid-19 were reported, which kept the death toll at 125 or 1.34% of the total number of cases,” he said in a statement Saturday.

Dr Noor Hisham also said that eight patients had recovered, with a total of 9,038 patients, or 97% of the total number of cases discharged since the Covid-19 outbreak began.

There are currently 154 active cases in treatment in the country’s health facilities, with eight patients in intensive care units (ICU) and six of them on ventilatory support.

The Health Ministry said the Camp Terendak Military Hospital in Melaka, along with the state Department of Health, are taking steps to address Covid-19 cases among its staff and patients.

So far three cases of Covid-19 have been detected in the hospital, two of which were found during the pre-surgery evaluation and a member of the staff in the hospital.

The Health Ministry has said it is conducting a risk assessment among its staff members.

“Active case detection and close-contact screening of Covid-19 cases is underway.

“Instructions for home quarantine have also been given to close contacts. For people who have severe respiratory symptoms, they will be referred to hospitals for isolation and further treatment,” said Dr. Noor Hisham.

He added that as of August 29, up to 109 people have been identified as close contacts to the positive Covid-19 cases and are awaiting the results of their tests.
