TANJUNG MALIM: Voters who were turned away from a polling station because they wore shorts was the result of a lack of communication, says Electoral Commission (EC) chairman Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh (Photo).

He said there shouldn’t have been a problem in the first place, as only those who wear party logos are barred from voting centers.

“It was a miscommunication, therefore we hope that the voters will come back and cast their votes,” he told reporters at the SK Aminuddin Baki polling station on Saturday (August 29).

Early Saturday, some voters were asked to leave the SK Aminuddin Baki polling station because they were wearing shorts.

Ghani also said that Slim’s by-election turnout is good.

“At 11 am, we had a turnout of at least 29%. The polls are open from 8 am to 5:30 pm; we hope that all voters will seize this opportunity and do their duty, especially young voters,” said.

He also advised voters to respect the time indicated on their voter card.

“The reason we do this is to avoid crowds, as we are still in the middle of the recovery movement control (MCO) command.

“However, it appears that many voters will come to the centers with their families. Therefore, we expect all voters to follow standard operating procedures, wear their masks and maintain social distancing,” he said.
