Jamie Carragher has explained why Liverpool “will not get close” to Lionel Messi as anticipation rises about the possible departure of the Barcelona superstar.
Manchester City appear to be leading the race, and a report from Argentina claimed on Friday that Messi has already agreed terms with Pep Guardiola’s team.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said he would love to sign Messi when asked about the Barca striker ahead of Saturday’s Community Shield clash against Arsenal.
But Klopp insisted that the Premier League champions “have no chance” of landing the Argentine ace due to the huge finances involved, and Carragher agrees.
“I don’t think Liverpool will come close to that,” the former Reds defender told Sky Sports.

“Financially, number one, but also because of the way Liverpool play.
“The City is more technical and that could use a little more to Messi”.
In addition to City, Messi has been linked to Inter Milan, while Juventus has also joined the race, according to The team .
But Carragher hopes to see him play in the Premier League, and believes that a reunion with former Barça manager Guardiola is the only option.

When asked if Messi could join a Premier League team, Carragher said: “I hope so, I would love to see Messi in the Premier League.”
“I want to observe it, I want to analyze it. The obvious place, the only place it can really go [in England] it’s Manchester City, with the history it has with the coach and the financial influence the club has. “
Carragher added: “But I’m not really sure how you get the deal with the numbers involved. It’s mind-blowing.”
Argentine journalist Verónica Brunati, quoted by Live Soccer TV, has assured that Messi has already agreed personal terms with City.
The report came after Klopp admitted that he would like to see how Messi fared in the Premier League, even if it wasn’t for Liverpool.
“Yes, who doesn’t want Messi on their team?” said the head of the Reds.
“But there is no chance. The numbers are not at all for us. But … good player to be honest!”

On the prospect of City signing the six-time Ballon d’Or winner, Klopp added: “Obviously it will help City and make it harder to beat them.
“For the Premier League, it would be great, that would help, but I’m not sure the Premier League needs that boost.
“He has never played in another league. Soccer is different here. I would like to see him. I’m not sure he will.”
