Back to the days of principles and ethics, Zaid tells Umno

Former minister Zaid Ibrahim says slogans like uniting the ummah have become outdated and it is no longer necessary to talk about them.

PETALING JAYA: Former Law Minister Zaid Ibrahim today called for a return to the founding days of Umno, when the party was based on sound and ethical principles.

Calling for a renewal of the party, he said that Umno should return to its noble struggle to defend Malays and Islam and be a high moral organization as exemplified by its founder, Onn Jaafar.

In a Facebook post, Zaid said that the party had sadly descended into a state where it would soon “split and fade,” according to tirades from the general assembly held last weekend.

Zaid said that Umno members must speak out and not cling to the old principle that the party, its leaders or the government cannot be questioned.

He said members must elect new leaders who are willing to resign when defeated and use their powers responsibly.

Today’s Umno, he said, had become a party eager for power.

Zaid said the party did not need PPBM or PAS as it could be a winning force on its own.

“Today, the members of the Umno are ashamed of the antics of the party leadership. The leaders seem to be trying to get the support of the PAS to ‘unite the ummah’.

“The false slogans, like unite the ummah, etc., have long since become obsolete and it is no longer necessary to talk about them.

“We have known for a long time that the PAS will only be with those who can give it power and money.

“Umno members must have confidence that some of their leaders can breathe new life into the party. Many more capable Malays are willing to join the party if they see a change. Open the door to young Malaysians who want to contribute to society through Umno, ”he said.
