Annuar Musa wants the mandate returned to the rank and file, as they have the right to decide who should occupy the highest positions.

PETALING JAYA: Ketereh Umno division chief Annuar Musa said today that Umno must hold partisan elections to decide on the candidates for prime minister and deputy prime minister in the next general election (GE15).

His call comes just after Umno’s former youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin called for party elections to be held before GE15 to resolve the so-called “internal chaos” in the party.

In a Facebook post, Annuar said that many had asked who would be designated PM and DPM. This led him to believe that Umno was still relevant and had the support of the people.

The Ketereh deputy, who considers himself favorable to the PPBM, said that the Umno rank and file can decide at the party’s polls who should be the prime minister.

“The constitution of our party establishes that the holders of public office have a term of three years. The last elections were held on June 30, 2018 and the mandate of those selected ends this June.

“As a party that follows the rules and relies on the voices of the rank and file, we must not hesitate to return the mandate to the rank and file to decide on the future leaders of the party.

“God willing, Umno’s PM and DPM candidates will be decided in June by party members,” he said.

“The party must elect a president and his deputy who has all the appropriate qualities to fill the positions of PM and DPM when the time comes.”

At the recent general assembly in Umno, party chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi indirectly attacked Annuar, described him as a plague and challenged him to resign from his cabinet post.

Although he did not name him directly, Zahid referred to Annuar and described him as “a minister who is not on stage but has stabbed Umno in the back.”
