BUTTERWORTH: March 31 of this year marks Annamah Abukutty’s 110th birthday, yet her age hasn’t stopped her from contributing to society.

Born and raised in Thachambadi, India, Annamah brought her knowledge and vast experience of traditional Indian herbs with her when she immigrated to Malaya before the start of World War II.

Annamah currently resides in Batu Gajah, Perak with some of her descendants, who are four children, 17 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Her 73-year-old son M Subramanian said that despite his age and disability, villagers around her residence and patients have visited her for health advice and longevity wisdom.

In addition to herbal medicine, he said people used to seek his services in midwifery, reflexology, and tattoos.

“People know her as ‘Patti Annamah,'” she told reporters here.

Annamah is currently in a wheelchair and has blindness in her left eye, but she can still converse well in Tamil and Malay and her memory still serves her very well.

Subramanian said his secret to longevity included fasting, meditation, and his homegrown herbs.

She said that she had been very consistent with her routine to remove toxins from her body and maintain her health.

“He also used to fast every Monday to flush toxins out of his body, but he stopped doing that about 15 years ago,” he added.

Meanwhile, Annamah’s grandson S Ezhilan, 41, said that the traditional herbs and medicines her grandmother used have been repackaged into health products and are available on the market.

Ezhilan, who just launched a new It’s Super Solution Sdn Bhd outlet in Jalan Raja Uda here today, markets men’s and women’s health products as well as massage ointments.

“The ingredients in all these products are made from traditional herbs by my grandmother and the family has been collecting the herbs by hand,” he said.

Earlier today, the director of operations for the Malaysian Book of Records (MBR), Christopher Wong, was in store to award the official MBR certificate to Annamah, recognizing her as the oldest woman in Malaysia.

Wong said this was in conjunction with Annamah’s 110th birthday this year and that she was awarded the same title by MBR last year at their headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

“I have been informed that she is also currently the oldest living Malaysian woman,” he added.
