PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) has implemented four measures to ensure the safety of consumers and the public when passing through the construction area on the Sungai Besi-Ulu Klang (SUKE) elevated highway.

“As an immediate measure, contractors have been instructed to stop working at the site, except for rescue work, including structural stabilization,” said LLM President Shuhaimi Hassan.

The second measure is to provide temporary access to the residents of the Puncak Banyan Condominium.

“Third, road users must be informed about the temporary access plan in all media,” he said in a statement.

Shuhaimi added that, as a last measure, SUKE has also been asked to inspect all gantry launchers and beams that have been deployed at the construction site.

He also said that SUKE has received approval for the total closure of the existing roads in Taman Leng Seng (Zone 2) and Jalan Alam Damai (Zone 3).

However, in Persiaran Alam Damai (Zone 1), SUKE must ensure that there is an alternate route before it can obtain permission to close Persiaran Alam Damai.

Currently, Shuhaimi said that the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) and the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) are investigating the cause of the incident and will submit a report to the government.

Yesterday, three people were killed when a launch crane capsized at the SUKE construction site near Puncak Banyan, Persiaran Alam Damai, Cheras.

According to the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department, the incident involved six victims, three of whom were construction workers.

Projek Lintasan Kota Holdings Sdn Bhd said the incident occurred when a component of a gantry fell.
