Muhyiddin calls for lifting of travel restrictions between Singapore and Malaysia

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin says the pandemic should not be an obstacle to efforts to improve existing cooperation between the two countries.

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin today expressed hope that various travel restrictions between Malaysia and Singapore could be lifted soon in the interest of bilateral relations. These arrangements, although previously agreed upon, have been postponed.

These include the Reciprocal Green Lane (RGL), the Periodic Travel Agreement (PCA), and the Daily Travel Agreement (DCA).

Muhyiddin shared this matter in a Facebook post after a courtesy call from Singapore’s Foreign Minister Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, who is on a two-day official visit to Malaysia to discuss bilateral ties on trade matters. , investment and health.

According to Muhyiddin’s post, during the meeting Balakrishnan also extended a letter from Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, inviting him to attend the 10th annual Malaysia-Singapore Leadership Retreat.

“I took note of Singapore’s proposal to host the retreat this year after it was postponed to 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” Muhyiddin said.

On a proposal for mutual recognition of the Covid-19 vaccination certificate, Muhyiddin called for cooperation at the technical level involving both countries to continue and end in the future.

While agreeing with Balakrishnan that Covid-19 had brought new challenges to both countries, Muhyiddin said the pandemic should not become an obstacle to efforts to improve existing cooperation between the two countries.

At the meeting, Muhyiddin also addressed the current situation in Myanmar and ASEAN’s leadership in handling the crisis.

“At the end of the meeting, I expressed Malaysia’s commitment to not only maintain the existing good relations with Singapore, but also to strengthen ties,” he added.

Balakrishnan was accompanied by the Singapore High Commissioner in Malaysia, Vanu Gopala Menon, and the Secretary General of the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Chee Wee Kiong. On the Malaysian side were the Foreign Minister, Hishammuddin Hussein, and the Secretary General of the Foreign Ministry, Muhammad Shahrul Ikram Yaakob.
