MELAKA: Hundreds of bottles of high-end Scotch whiskey were seized by the Customs Department in an operation in Puchong, Selangor, recently.

In addition to whiskey, Customs also seized rum in the March 9 operation, conducted jointly by department headquarters and Melaka Customs.

Customs Director General Datuk Seri Abdul Latif Abdul Kadir said a total of 8,142.82 liters of alcoholic beverages were seized with unpaid taxes amounting to RM1.6 thousand.

He said officers raided a warehouse in Puchong at 7:30 pm and found a trailer loaded with the contraband.

“The trailer was taken to Melaka Customs for further investigation,” he said on Tuesday (March 16), adding that initial checks found the drinks to be genuine.

Abdul Latif said that four people between the ages of 24 and 47 have been arrested, including two foreigners.

The case is being investigated under the Customs Law of 1967 and the Excise Law of 1976.

“We urge the public with any information about smuggling activities to report.

“Informants will remain anonymous,” he said.
