Honda City RS e: HEV – Fifth Generation Flagship Hybrid That Will Finally Make Its Malaysian Market Debut Tomorrow

Honda Malaysia is finally ready to give the City RS e: HEV its market debut. The top-end model of the fifth-generation sedan in the local lineup was formally unveiled when the City made its local debut in October last year, but at the launch point it was announced that it would go on sale in January.

That, of course, never happened, the delay in the introduction of the hybrid is due to some problems with prices. This has finally been resolved, and we understand that the RS is due to have its Malaysian market launch tomorrow, when car prices will also be announced. The RS will sit on a range of four City models that includes the S, E and V gasoline variants.

The variant’s arrival was hinted at in the press announcement about the Honda Connect vehicle’s telematics system, which was launched today. It was mentioned that the system is making its local working debut at this month’s City RS e: HEV.

In short, the RS e: HEV is powered by an Intelligent Multi-Mode Driving (i-MMD) powertrain. The hybrid system consists of a 98hp / 127Nm 1.5-liter Atkinson cycle four-cylinder i-VTEC engine, which does not power the car but functions primarily as a generator with the help of an integrated electric motor (which also acts as a beginning).

A second larger engine, producing 109 PS & 253 Nm, provides propulsion. Because the electric motor primarily drives the car, the i-MMD system eliminates a traditional gearbox, but the motor can provide direct drive at higher speeds using a lock-up clutch and single-speed transmission, as it is more efficient than an electric motor at those speeds. More on the RS, including its price, when it is officially unveiled.
