KOTA KINABALU: Warisan will invoke a previously signed resignation letter for Sebatik Assemblyman Hassan Amir Gani to vacate the seat after he announced his decision to leave the party on February 25 to be independent.

Warisan President Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said the letter will be sent to the President of the Sabah state assembly, Datuk Kadzim Yahya, and to Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin, and to the Electoral Commission (EC).

“He signed it of his own free will with legal witnesses and pledged in the name of God to remain with the party to serve the people until the end of the current assembly period,” Shafie said while playing a video of Hassan making the pledge. on September 10 before he was named Warisan’s nominee.

“We will send the letter in the next few days. We analyze other legal actions in time,” Shafie said when asked if the party planned to take legal action against Hassan.

Hassan, who announced his resignation through the national news agency Bernama, did not send his letter of resignation from the party and it remained unreachable for former party members as well as most of the media.

“Each individual must have some dignity and honor, and different when it is a block that is formed together, that is understandable.

“Hassan didn’t even have the courtesy to send a resignation letter. I even tried calling him but couldn’t reach him.”

Shafie spoke to reporters after meeting with all 21 Warisan assemblymen and seven MPs who made it clear that they remain loyal to the party despite offers from Gabungan Rakyat Sabah on Monday (March 1).

“There are more than 700,000 unemployed and people are suffering. In some places, people have a hard time getting basic needs. I hope this government will focus on these issues and spend money on people’s basic needs.

“Don’t spend money buying assembly members,” he said.

Shafie, whose Warisan Plus government lost to GRS in the early state elections, said that when Warisan formed the government after GE14, Upko and other assemblymen who joined the party came of their own free will.

“None of them received any promises or money offers. I testify in the name of God,” he said, adding that in opposition now, Warisan’s elected representatives were still committed to serving the people.

Shafie said there was a lot of speculation about the Warisan assemblymen.

“We are united here under the Warisan umbrella. I want to assure people that under the pandemic, we continue to serve them in any small way as the opposition. We do not sell the mandate of the people,” he said.

Shafie said he will meet with his fellow Upko opposition leaders, Sabah DAP and Sabah PKR.
