Police will seek pre-trial detention extension for ‘non-cooperative’ Patrick Teoh

JOHOR BARU: Police would request an extension of the remand order for former radio host and actor Patrick Teoh, who is under investigation for allegedly insulting Crown Prince Johor.

Johor Police Chief Com. Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said the investigations could not be completed, as Teoh has not been cooperating with the police.

“His preventive detention will end on May 12, and we will request the extension of the preventive detention to the Court of First Instance.

“Generally, pretrial detention will last up to four days under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act of 1998,” he said, adding that the police had initially requested a four-day pretrial detention after Teoh was arrested, but they were only given three days.

Comm Ayob added that Teoh had told the police that he had forgotten his email password and had lost his phone.

“He lost his phone the day before he was called for questioning and was unable to remember his email password, so we will ask him for a return extension.

“It is puzzling because he could remember his password when he was making that obscene statement, but he forgot everything after being arrested, so perhaps he could remember his password if he stays with us a little longer,” he said.

He added that the police will not commit anyone to commit a crime, especially if it is the state of Johor.

“He could have done this several times before and got away with it, but not this time,” he added.

Teoh was previously reported arrested on Saturday (May 9) in Petaling Jaya, in connection with allegations of insulting Johor’s crown prince, Tunku Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim.

According to his lawyer Datuk Seri Rajan Navaratnam, Teoh allegedly shared a video that Tunku Ismail posted last year showing Tunku Ismail and others dressed in military attire handling firearms.

Teoh is believed to have shared the video on Thursday (May 7) and used profanity when commenting on his Facebook page.
