KUALA LUMPUR: Special Adviser to the Prime Minister of Public Health Tan Sri Dr. Jemilah Mahmood said that it was not impossible for Malaysia to achieve zero daily positive cases of Covid-19 through the implementation of the National Covid-19 Immunization Program.
He said that if 80 per cent of Malaysians get vaccinated, the country will succeed in achieving ‘herd immunity’ as a goal.
However, he said that during the implementation of the vaccination program, people must also play a role by continuing to adhere to the standard operating procedure (SOP) established to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
“I think it is not impossible to achieve zero Covid-19 (daily case), but we try to reduce the number of cases as best we can and try to protect ourselves first.
“Achieving zero cases does not lie only in the vaccine, but people must also play a very important role in maintaining public health, such as wearing masks and practicing physical distancing until the number of cases reaches zero and maintaining it during for a while, ”he said on the Malaysia Petang Ini program broadcast live on Bernama TV today.
Jemilah further commented that the National Covid-19 Immunization Program has never been a mandatory program and is not imposed on Malaysians.
“We have to understand that the vaccine will save many people from the disease (Covid-19) which is quite serious.
“Therefore, protecting oneself is a way that we can protect all people and also think about our relatives who are elderly and have a higher risk of contracting diseases,” he said.
On the impact of the anti-vaccine group’s activities on the national program, Jemilah said the group existed all over the world, but was very small compared to those who understood the science and supported vaccination.
