KUALA LUMPUR: Mukhriz Mahathir has divested a total of 24.6 million common shares in Opcom Holdings Bhd, ceasing its position as a substantial shareholder of the company, Bursa Malaysia was told today.

In a filing with the stock exchange, Opcom said the sale was made through two direct business transactions on February 10.

Mukhriz’s wife, Norzieta Zakaria, also ceased to be a substantial shareholder in Opcom after Norzieta’s company, M Ocean Capital Sdn Bhd, divested 18 million shares through the open market on Wednesday.

Opcom Holdings, a manufacturer of fiber optic cables, was the center of controversy in September 2019 over claims that the company would benefit from a national plan to lay fiber optic cables nationwide for Internet connections at much higher speeds. Faster.

The national fiberization plan was announced in August of that year by the Pakatan Harapan government, headed by Mukhriz’s father, Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, as prime minister.

Mukhriz is a co-founder of the company and was its president until 2009 and had a substantial stake in the company at that time, while his older brother Mokhzani was president until May 2019.

In May last year, Opcom issued a statement to say that it was not involved in the national fiberization plans as it did not have the necessary licenses to qualify as a participant in the contract tenders.
