SIBU: The spread of Covid-19 has reached a worrying level in Sibu.

In fact, according to the coordinator of the Sibu Division Disaster Management Committee, Dr. Annuar Rapaee, the spread of Covid-19 after the appearance of the Pasai Cluster last month is no longer limited to the 58 longhouses that are were affected.

“As for the number of new cases at the moment, 27 percent are from the group, while another 70 percent come from the city area,” he said today.

Annuar, who is also Sarawak’s Assistant Minister for Local Government and Housing, said this during a chat broadcast live on Facebook, hosted by Sibu City Council Chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh.

Sarawak’s chief infectious disease specialist, Dr. Chua Hock Hin, also joined the talk.

Chua said that the prevalence of the disease in Sibu City was very real and that everyone would have to do their part to slow the spread of the deadly virus.

He regretted that many people did not bother to get a swab test after developing Covid-19 symptoms, such as a mild fever, runny nose and sore throat.

“When they arrive at the hospital, they are usually very sick, but the damage has already been done and they have already transmitted the disease to other people,” he said.

He urged the public to undergo swab testing as soon as they experience symptoms so they can be treated early.

“While they await the results of the swab test, they should refrain from mixing with other people to avoid spreading the virus,” he added.

Chua emphasized that the public must adhere to the Movement Control Order (MCO) that is being enforced in Sibu, as well as strictly follow the standard operating procedure (SOP) to combat the disease.

“Do not do it only for yourself, but for your parents, children and also your spouse,” he added.

The talk, which drew an audience of more than 200 people, took place just as the Chinese community is busy preparing for the Lunar New Year celebration that falls on February 12.

Ting, who is very concerned about the growing trend of Covid-19 cases in Sibu, has been asking the community to cancel his family reunion for this year.

As of yesterday, Sibu has registered 101 positive Covid-19 cases, with 32 from the Pasai Cluster, 30 from active case detections, five from symptom screening and 34 from swab tests performed at Sibu health centers.

“After the Chinese New Year, there will probably be 200 new cases a day,” Ting said, adding that he was concerned after discovering that 45 healthcare workers had been infected.

He said everyone must take personal responsibility for fighting the deadly virus.

“Cases in other cities are also increasing, but not as many as in Sibu. It will not go away if we don’t take personal responsibility for preventing it, ”he said. -Called
