KLANG: The ruler of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, is concerned that corruption and the spread of false news, intended to smear, are increasing among the people, politicians and public officials.

A statement issued by Istana Alam Shah here on Thursday (February 4) reiterated the Sultan’s ongoing concerns regarding these issues.

“His Highness emphasized that corruption and slander, which are currently prevalent, is the main enemy within the community and can destroy our beloved nation.

“His Highness would like to remind Malays especially that corruption and slander are forbidden and sinful behavior in Islam,” the statement said.

He added that Sultan Sharafuddin believed that corruption and slander had caused divisions in the nation’s political scene and tarnished the reputation of the country’s administration internationally.

This was reflected in the country’s significant drop in the Corruption Perceptions Index last year.

“At the same time, His Highness commended Sinar Harian for being courageous and reporting on corruption in Malaysia through his Rasuah Busters segment,” the statement said.

Sultan Sharafuddin was surprised to read about the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) disclosure that half of the corruption cases in the country involved public officials.

Given this, the Governor urged the MACC to continue fulfilling its duties diligently to eradicate corruption.

His Highness also hopes that those who commit corruption will be immediately arrested with solid evidence and tried in court quickly and openly so that it will be an impediment to society.

Sultan Sharafuddin also advised everyone to play a role in stopping corruption, which was an immoral act that will have a long-term negative impact on society.

He added that the current situation was further aggravated by the spread of false news to defame, which is increasing on social networks.

“His Highness does not want the failures and the division that is happening in the political arena to spread until the people divide as well,” the statement said.

He added that Sultan Sharafuddin urged the country’s multiracial citizens to remain united and smart to put aside negative elements, such as corruption and slander, for the good of the nation and the well-being of future generations.

Sultan Sharafuddin believed that in case the people were united and loyal, as well as working hard, the nation would continue to advance.
