SIBU: More than 1,000 people in the Sibu district desperately need food aid after losing their jobs or income following the closure of their work sectors due to the enforcement of the motion control order (MCO) since January 16.
Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) Sibu branch president Chambai Lindong said those affected were from rural areas who worked as general workers, cooks and assistants in cafeterias, restaurants and bistros, assistants in hairdressers, electricians and welders, truck drivers and assistants, shop. assistants, security guards and cleaning.
He said that since January 26, they had sent their names through the SDNU Sibu branch to apply for food aid, but many complained that they had not received “Sarawakku Sayang” food aid.
“We have been receiving your requests for food aid via WhatsApp and, to date, we have submitted more than 1,000 names to the Sibu Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) through the Sibu district office to coordinate the distribution of food baskets.
“And the names of those in need of food aid keep coming to us,” he said in a statement here today.
Having no money to buy food for their families, Lindong said they urgently needed food.
“We believe that their situation is genuine. There are 11 more days of MCO 2.0 in Sibu. Unless they receive food aid immediately, their situation will get worse. Your savings, if any, will dry up. And if that’s the case, a lot of people will starve, “he said.
The organization is also concerned for the rural population of Sibu Jaya, who are in a similar situation, as many of them do not know what to do or where to turn for help.
Lindong said that the situation facing the rural population staying in Sibu City is really worrying.
“Many of them wanted to go back to their respective longhouses, but under the MCO, they were not allowed to do so.
“His hope is now in the SDMC. The sooner food aid is delivered to them, the better, ”he added.
