PETALING JAYA: The police will call former Attorney General Tommy Thomas to have his statement recorded in his recently released memoir “My Story: Justice in the Wilderness.”
Selangor CID chief Fadzil Ahmat said Thomas would be called in to give his statement “as soon as possible” after a police report was filed against the lawyer for comments made in the book.
He added that the matter is being investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code for defamation.
Earlier today, a senior retired legal officer filed a police report against Thomas for allegedly tarnishing his reputation by claiming that he was unable to prosecute Najib Razak for corruption in the SRC International case.
Mohamad Hanafiah Zakaria, who retired as director general of the Judicial and Legal Training Institute in August, urged police to investigate the former attorney general for criminal defamation.
Yesterday, Najib Razak had also sent a demand letter to Thomas for allegedly defaming him in his memoirs in connection with the murder of the Mongolian citizen Altantuya Shaariibuu in 2006.
Najib’s lawyer, Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, said his client was seeking an apology, ringgit 10 million in compensation, an immediate public retraction of the book’s statement, as well as a commitment not to repeat the allegations and comments.
