KUALA LUMPUR (January 30): Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador (Photo) says the current compound fine of RM1,000 imposed on those who violate standard operating procedures (SOPs) for motion control order (MCO) should be increased as Covid-19 cases across the country continue to rise.
He said that each week, the police would issue thousands of citations to people for violating SOPs, most for not adhering to physical distancing.
To make matters worse, he said, there were some who even made interdistrict and interstate trips for no valid reason.
“If the 1,000 RM compound is considered small, then those who are stubborn will surely pay the price when the decision to increase the compound’s fine is published. The time has come to increase the compound’s fine,” he said when contacted by Bernama. on Saturday (January 30).
He said he had instructed police personnel to issue citations to violators and not give them leeway or let them out with a warning.
Abdul Hamid said that since police began enforcing the latest MCO, a total of 474 staff members have tested positive for Covid-19, while another 1,628 have been quarantined.
“It is really very sad when our infected leaders have to be treated by another group of leaders in the hospitals,” he said.
There has been a spike in Covid-19 cases across the country lately, with the number of daily cases approaching the 6,000 mark after 5,725 cases were reported on Friday (January 29) and 5,728 on Saturday. – Bernama
