Jurgen Klopp faces Fabinho’s dilemma as Liverpool consider a midfield rethink

[ad_1]

Liverpool continued their slump in form with an FA Cup loss to Manchester United on Sunday.

Two goals from Mohamed Salah weren’t enough as the Reds were knocked out of the competition after a 3-2 setback in the fourth round.

The Premier League and world champions now have a quick turnaround before heading to Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday.

And here we look forward to the changes Jurgen Klopp could make when his team is next in action.

The defensive question

Liverpool were stronger in defense than many had anticipated at Old Trafford.

Alisson Becker will surely continue between the sticks, while left-back Andy Robertson was one of the best on the weekend.

Trent Alexander-Arnold improved his performance against Burnley having been preferred to Neco Williams at right back.

However, the central defender is where things could get interesting.

Joel Matip is likely to return after having rested at United, although Fabinho cannot be guaranteed to remain his central defensive partner.

While Rhys Williams had a tough time Sunday, Nat Phillips has been patiently waiting for an opportunity, while Jordan Henderson, if he’s fit, is another option.

Poser midfield

The engine room was overhauled against United and as a consequence has offered Klopp a chance to rethink.

Curtis Jones did well when he shifted him to a central role, while James Milner performed admirably, but he may not be up to two games in a week.

With options available, there is a chance to push Fabinho to midfield, although Henderson is more likely to retire if the captain is available.

Gini Wijnaldum and Thiago Alcantara have been mainstays in recent weeks, but neither were in top form on Sunday.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is another alternative, while Liverpool are still awaiting the return of Naby Keita.

Forward trio reunited

With Tottenham similarly eliminating for a spot in the top four, Thursday’s game will have serious ramifications in the race for the Champions League qualification.

Salah and Roberto Firmino were called up at United and, having combined for the two goals, it is almost certain that they will start in London.

Sadio Mane will be poised to join them after being benched over the weekend, and Jones was preferred by the left.

Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi are likely restricted to substitute roles, while Takumi Minamino has moved a bit further away from the contention for a starting role.
