KUALA LUMPUR: Former Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor’s appeal against his conviction and sentence of 12 months in prison, as well as the fine of 2 million ringgit, for accepting a bribe of 2 million ringgit from a businessman will be heard in April.

His lawyer, Datuk Tan Hock Chuan, when contacted by reporters, said that the Deputy Clerk of the Court of Appeals, Darmafikri Abu Adam, set April 22 and 23 to hear the appeal during the handling of the case, carried out through the Zoom app today.

The proceedings were also attended by Deputy Prosecutor Rullizah Abdul Majid, who said that the court also set March 5 for further handling of the case.

Tengku Adnan, 70, filed the appeal on December 21 last year against the conviction and sentence imposed by High Court Judge Mohamed Zaini Mazlan the same day after finding the Putrajaya Member of Parliament guilty of the charge.

However, the judge accepted Tengku Adnan’s request for a stay of execution of the jail sentence and fine pending his appeal.

Tengku Adnan was accused in his capacity as a civil servant, namely Minister of Federal Territories, of having received for himself a total of RM2 million from a businessman, Tan Sri Chai Kin Kong, who is a director of Aset Kayamas Sdn Bhd (AKSB) , through a check from the Hong Leong Islamic Bank belonging to the company that was deposited into a CIMB account owned by Tadmansori Holdings Sdn Bhd (THSB), in which Tengku Adnan has an interest and which AKSB knows as related to its functions officers.

He was charged with committing the crime at the Pusat Bandar Damansara branch of CIMB Bank Berhad here on June 14, 2016.

The charge was framed in Section 165 of the Penal Code that establishes a prison sentence of up to two years or a fine or both, if convicted. -Called
