KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s Chief Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said on Tuesday (January 19) that all Malaysian states, with the exception of Sarawak, will be placed under the Movement Control Order (MCO) from this Friday.
At a press conference, Mr. Ismail Sabri, who is also the Minister of Defense, said that MCO will be implemented in six states, including Kedah, Perak, Pahang, Terengganu, Perlis and Negeri Sembilan. This will be effective from 12:01 am on January 22 and will last until February 4.
“The MCO’s standard operating procedures are the same as I have announced before. That means no residents are allowed out except two from a home for daily needs, including emergencies,” he said.
Last week, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said that five states, including Penang, Selangor, Melaka, Johor, and Sabah, and the federal territories of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Labuan will return under the MCO for two weeks, from 13 to 26. from January.
Kelantan was subsequently placed under the MCO as of January 16.

The Health Ministry reported 3,631 new COVID-19s and 14 more deaths on Tuesday. Nine additional groups were also detected, including two involving family members.
There are now more than 165,000 COVID-19 cases in Malaysia, with close to 40,000 active cases. The health system is at a breaking point, said Mr. Muhyiddin.
Last week, the king declared a nationwide state of emergency, which will take effect from January 11 to August 1, to curb the spread of COVID-19.
