Covid-19: Apollo Market in Penang ordered to close as of Monday (Jan 18)

BUTTERWORTH (Bernama): Apollo Market was ordered closed here for seven days starting Monday (Jan 18) due to non-compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) of the motion control order.

Seberang Perai Utara District Police Chief ACP Noorzainy Mohd Noor said that an integrated operation with the Ministry of Health and the Seberang Perai City Council to monitor SOP compliance found that the market was too crowded, making it difficult to practice of physical distancing.

“The organizers also did not control the entry and exit limits of customers. The entrance to the market was not properly marked for physical distancing and the public was seen queuing on the shoulder of the road,” said ACP Noorzainy.

He added when contacted on Sunday (January 17) that the Ministry has issued a temporary closure notice to the Apollo Market for seven days to reorganize its system to comply with established SOPs.

Meanwhile, Timur Laut District Police Chief ACP Soffian Santong said that the police conducted regular inspections in three markets that were the focus of the public, namely Air Itam Market, Jalan Perak Market and Jelutong Market. .

“After making some adjustments with the Penang City Council, including closing some roads in the market area and reorganizing the street vendors outside the market, this has helped reduce congestion,” he said.

“During checks yesterday and today we discovered that visitors were complying with SOPs. I hope the public will continue to comply with MCO SOPs in an effort to slow the spread of the pandemic,” added ACP Soffian – Bernama
