PETALING JAYA: Two opposition leaders want Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to end the emergency and begin an all-party peace agreement to avoid calling general elections until the Covid-19 pandemic is under control.

The president of the PKR and leader of the opposition, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, is leading an effort for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to cancel the Emergency.

He has written to all MPs to send a memorandum to Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah calling for the measure and the convening of Parliament.

“In the letter, I suggested to all deputies that they file an appeal immediately. May this letter obtain the support and wisdom of Yang di-Pertuan Agong to withdraw the proclamation of Emergency and subsequently decree a session of Parliament that will be held before January 31 to discuss issues on the Emergency, Covid-19 and the economic crisis “, said. in a statement yesterday.

In the letter, Anwar said that the current measures were adequate to address Covid-19 and that a state of emergency was not required as the current economic crisis resulted from rising unemployment and poverty.

Sabah Heritage Party Chairman Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal said the Emergency should end and Muhyiddin would begin a political peace agreement.

“If there is a need to amend the Federal Constitution to avoid the Sarawak elections or any by-elections during a pandemic, the Perikatan Nasional government should negotiate with the Opposition to achieve a two-thirds majority to do so,” he said in a statement.
