SIBU: Compliance with the Movement Control Order (MCO) is now necessary in Sibu to avoid a worse situation of the Covid-19 infection that has reached a very worrying level.

Sarawak’s Assistant Minister of Housing and Public Health, Dr. Annuar Rapaee, said that if the MCO is not implemented now, the situation could deteriorate until it becomes uncontrollable.

“We cannot afford to wait until the number of cases increases or decreases. The moment (for the MCO implementation) is now, ”he said in an interview via Zoom with Bernama and RTM, here, today.

He called on the residents of the Sibu Division that covers Sibu, Selangau and Kanowit districts to comply with the MCO to curb the spread of Covid-19 during the order period.

“If we all adhere to the MCO these two weeks, I am sure that we can break the chain of Covid-19 infection in Sibu,” he said.

Annuar said the high viral infection in Sibu was concentrated in the Pasai Siong area where the Pasai Cluster started on January 7.

Currently, he said, the Covid-19 screening was focused on the area that saw 19 longhouses imposed with movement restriction since January 10.

The Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) has reported an additional 157 cases in the Pasai Group today, bringing the total number in this group to 462.

Some 1,400 people from this group have been tested and, of this number, 888 were found to be negative, while 50 are still awaiting results.

JPBN has decided that the MCO implementation in the Sibu Division will be effective from 12:01 am, January 16 to 11.59 pm, January 29 (14 days) and the related SOP will be announced to the public tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the Conditional MCO (CMCO) remains in the Sarikei Division, which had previously been declared a red zone along with Sibu. -Called
