UPDATE: MCMC has just released a statement in which they report that they have temporarily suspended their official account because it was hacked.

He also said that the public should not be influenced by “suspicious, ugly and defamatory messages that have been uploaded through the account, which are not from MCMC.”

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s Multimedia and Communications Commission blocked and then deactivated his official Twitter account today (Jan 12).

Before it was deactivated, the MCMC account had more than 70,000 followers.

The regulatory body’s latest post was a statement informing users on social media that they should practice good manners when posting about the motion control order and the emergency declaration.

In the statement, MCMC said it will monitor social media to curb the spread of misinformation regarding the 3Rs: royalty, race and religion.

The reason for the deactivation remains unclear, however the #MCMC hashtag is now trending on Twitter with over 10,000 tweets.

The majority of users shared screenshots of what appear to be old tweets from the MCMC account, the majority from 2014. The screenshots of the posts were mostly offensive.

MCMC’s official Facebook account remains active.

LifestyleTech has reached out to MCMC for comment.
