KAJANG: The Ministry of the Environment and Water (KASA) aims to convert river reserves into recreation areas and public parks with the construction of 10,000 kilometers of trails in selected areas of the country by 2030.

Its Secretary General, Datuk Seri Ir Dr. Zaini Ujang (pix) said that it would be carried out within the framework of the Sendero Nacional program where the ministry, in collaboration with state governments, would identify suitable river reserves to be developed as recreational areas with the construction of trails and river beautification activities.

“Since this effort began in 2020, 42 trails have been built, covering approximately 210 kilometers, turning the river bank into recreational areas.

“Many more areas will be identified as our goal is to build 1,000 kilometers of trails every year until 2030,” he told the media after receiving the proposal document for the Sungai Air Hitam master plan from the residents of Kampung Dato ‘Abu Bakar. Baginda here. , today.

He said river reserves are often referred to as squatter areas, landfills and are overgrown with weeds, which are factors that contribute to pollution in the country.

He said that with the construction of river trails and beautification programs, people would be encouraged to go there for recreational activities, such as jogging, picnicking, fishing and biking.

“When people go there, it will prevent irresponsible parties from turning the river area into a landfill, and if it is well developed, the area could be promoted for ecotourism,” he added.

It would also encourage the participation of the public, the local community, corporate bodies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the monitoring, conservation and beautification of rivers at the national level, he said. -Called
