The new official car of the Prime Minister of Penang, a 2019 Mercedes-Benz S560e bought for RM 458,000.

PETALING JAYA: Former Minister of Youth and Sports Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman | has criticized the DAP-led Penang state government for purchasing a new Mercedes-Benz S560e for Prime Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

The official car, which cost RM 458,000, replaces a Mercedes S300L purchased in 2013 for RM 298,263.

Syed Saddiq said in a Facebook post tonight that there was no need for a luxury car at a time when many people were out of work due to Covid-19 and others affected by worsening flooding in certain parts of the country.

“We must be fair! Prior to this, we had criticized the Kelantan PAS leadership for their new official Mercedes-Benz vehicles and for raising their salary during the Covid-19 era. Now, it’s the same, ”he said.

Chow was quoted as saying “I received the car yesterday, I don’t know the details of the purchase.” The secretary of state said the purchase of the new car was approved at a state executive council meeting in November 2019.

Buying new cars for chief ministers and kissing menteris has come under fire in the past.

Last year, the Kelantan government came under fire for buying 14 Mercedes-Benz cars for its menteri kissing and members of the state executive council.

In 2014, then-Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng defended the purchase of a Mercedes-Benz S300L, saying it was better in the long run and had the safety of state leaders in mind.
