Umno Vice President Mohamad Hasan says he cannot understand why PPBM wants to compete in the seats already held by PAS or Umno.

PETALING JAYA: Umno Vice President Mohamad Hasan has denied that Umno wanted to “kill” PPBM, even as his party reconsiders its relationship with PPBM.

Nearly three-quarters of its divisional leaders have said they would not want to cooperate with PPBM during the upcoming general election.

However, Mohamad argued that it was the other way around.

Mohamad said that Umno, PAS and PPBM had agreed to avoid three-way fights in the next general elections and the decision should be respected.

He said he couldn’t understand why PPBM wanted to compete in seats already occupied by PAS or Umno, and they were trying to capture Umno’s “market share”.

PPBM’s intentions had infuriated Umno and the party could not be blamed for it. “We are not jealous nor do we want to kill anyone. But it is you who wants to kill us, ”he said, referring to PPBM.

“And Umno is not going to be silent. As vice president, I will fight for the party. Don’t try to spoil our market share, ”Mohamad said in an interview tonight.

Mohamad, informally known as Tok Mat, was asked to comment on the status of Barisan Nasional’s relationship with Perikatan Nasional in the wake of the Umno divisions’ rejection of the PPBM.

Yesterday, Umno President Ahmad Zahid Hamidi revealed that 143 out of 191 Umno division heads told the party leadership that they do not want to cooperate with PPBM for the upcoming general elections.

Over the weekend, Umno leaders openly targeted the PN, and several called on their party to withdraw its support for the government.

The Umno high council will debate on Wednesday a motion on the future of the party’s relationship with PPBM.
