KLUANG: Malaysia is in talks with Singapore to standardize standard operating procedures (SOPs) on cross-border travel for compassionate reasons, says Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.

The Foreign Minister said that currently, Malaysians working in Singapore who want to return to the country out of compassion would have to call to cross the border.

“Right now, the SOP for compassionate travel, for those with illness or death in the family, is ad hoc.

“We (Malaysia and Singapore) are negotiating a standardized SOP for this group of people,” said Hishammuddin, who is also a Sembrong MP, after visiting flood victims at the SMK Seri Sembrong temporary flood shelter here on Sunday. (January 3).

When asked if Malaysians working in the island republic would be allowed to return after showing proof of vaccination in the future, Hishammuddin said the matter was a matter for the Ministry of Health.

“It is not up to Wisma Putra to decide, as we are not sure whether the vaccine taken by Singapore is recognized in Malaysia or not.

“The Ministry of Health will decide it and we will comply with its decision,” he said.

The island republic launched its Covid-19 vaccination campaign on December 30, prioritizing healthcare workers and the elderly.
