(Reuters) – Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes was delighted with Friday’s 2-1 win over Aston Villa, which put them on par with leaders Liverpool, but said his team must learn to kill teams. to hold a challenge for the Premier League title.

United extended their unbeaten streak in the league to 10 games with Fernandes scoring the winning goal from the penalty spot after Bertrand Traore canceled Anthony Martial’s home team opener.

United largely controlled the game, but Paul Pogba, Fernandes and Marcus Rashford failed to bring home their advantage.

In the closing minutes, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were forced to desperately defend with center back Eric Bailly making a crucial stoppage time block to deny Villa a draw.

“It was difficult. We have to learn from this,” Fernandes told reporters after the game.

“We have to manage the game much better. We have had some situations to close the game, we have to try to score because we know that the teams can score. If we close the game earlier it is better. It is better. We have to take care of this.”

Pogba put on a solid performance in midfield, starting the move for Martial’s first goal before winning the crucial penalty.

Fernandes is confident that the French World Cup winner will continue to deliver good performances.

“We all know the qualities he has. There is no doubt here. He will give more and more with the confidence that he has game after game,” said Fernandes.

United will face Manchester City in the League Cup semi-final on Wednesday.
