Johor wants the HSR project to continue even without Singapore

JOHOR BAHRU: The Johor state government expects the high-speed rail (HSR) project to continue, although the new alignment may not include Singapore.

Menteri Besar Datuk Hasni Mohammad said that the completion of the HSR Kuala Lumpur-Singapore project, which was announced yesterday, provides an opportunity for the federal government to re-evaluate the return on investment for the government.

He is confident that the government has a better plan in mind, either for Johor, as more than 300 kilometers of the proposed HSR alignment are in Johor; therefore, if the country benefited from the project, the State would benefit directly from it.

“Among the things we expect in Johor is that the HSR project will continue even if it does not include Singapore (alignment) because I believe it can bring direct benefits to the economy of the country and the state of Johor.

“So this is an opportunity to review the HSR plan, either on its own as Malaysia restructures the development of the railway industry,” he said today at a press conference here.

He noted that the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in Iskandar Puteri was also being reviewed to see if the light rail service (LRT) could replace it to complement the rail communication system in Johor.

He said the state government has not ruled out Singapore’s involvement in the investment aspect, although the new alignment will not involve the republic.

After all, he said, the HSR will also benefit Singaporeans in Malaysia.

The Benut Assemblyman also hoped that the state government would be allowed to participate in any new ISS discussions.

“Therefore, we hope that any further discussion related to the project will also take into account the views of Johor to ensure that the people of this state benefit from its implementation,” he said.

Yesterday, the Minister of the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed, said that a detailed study would be carried out on a national ISS project, including its feasibility and benefits for the people. -Called
