GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government has decided to grant tax assessment rebates in the amount of RM24.5 million to 649,950 taxpayers this year.
The chairman of the State Committee for Housing, Local Government and Urban and Rural Planning, Jagdeep Singh Deo, said today that taxpayers residing in low-cost (LC), low-medium-cost (LMC) and village houses in Penang received a refund of 100% on the tax assessment increase for 2021, which was previously approved.
He said other housing units in Penang not classified in LC, LMC or village housing received a 50% refund on the increase in tax assessment for this year.
“The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has awarded a total of RM10.3 million in tax refunds for Penang Island.
“The Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) has provided RM14.2 million in refunds on the mainland,” he said at a press conference here.
Last year, both city councils failed to collect RM47.3 million in tax assessment to ease the burden on taxpayers.
He said the exemption was granted in accordance with the Local Government Act of 1976, which includes allowing the public to present their objections regarding the increase in tax assessment.
Among the main objections to the increase was that it was too sudden and imposed at a time when people were struggling with the high cost of living amid the Covid-19 pandemic, he added.
Previously, Jagdeep attended the “Back to School” program with Jelutong MP RSN Rayer and Malaysia Hindhudharma Maamandram (Penang branch) chairman NK Thanabalan at the Penang Hindu Endowment Board here.
Thanabalan, who organized the program, said that 200 Penang students from the B40 community received a RM 100 voucher to buy school uniforms, bags and office supplies.
