1,300 People Arrested on New Years Day for MCO-Related Crimes

PETALING JAYA: Police arrested 1,388 people yesterday on New Year’s Day for crimes under the motion control order (MCO), Chief Security Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said.

In a statement, it said 1,352 of them were fined and 32 were referred. Four others were released on bail.

A total of 623 people were arrested in pubs and discos, 424 for not practicing physical distancing, 137 for not wearing masks and 118 for not registering their personal data when entering the stores.

Authorities also arrested 95 undocumented immigrants yesterday as part of their ongoing Op Benteng campaign.

“The government will crack down on anyone who tries to enter the country’s borders illegally, and enforcement agencies will continue to tighten our border control,” Ismail said.

It added that 96,312 people had come through KLIA from July 24, 2020 to January 1, from various countries.

A total of 540 people were sent to the hospital for treatment, 88,225 were allowed to return home, while 7,547 are currently in mandatory quarantine.
