PUTRAJAYA (Bernama): The BASE jumping training session held here on Friday (January 1) had the permission of the administrator of the building in question and the Putrajaya Corporation (PPj) as organizer and local authority.

The director of PPj’s corporate communications division, Tengku Aina Tengku Ismail Shah, said Malaysia’s Special Rescue and Assistance Team (SMART) was also briefed on the session and that staff were deployed to standby at the scene.

“The training also took into account all aspects of safety and the weather. Wind direction indicators were placed in the building and the landing area.

“Based on the direction and strength of the wind during the incident, it was safe to make the jump,” he said in a statement on Saturday (January 2).

She was commenting on the incident in which a man died while conducting a BASE jump test at the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development building here.

In the 5.35pm incident on Friday, Azuan Taharudin, 49, along with seven other BASE jumpers from BASE Ababil Club were training for a performance in conjunction with Federal Territories Day 2021.

Tengku Aina said that during the jump, Azuan lost control of his parachute and hit the windows of the building several times before falling.

“Azuan, who had more than 18 years of skydiving experience, had performed more than 300 BASE jumps.

“He also participated in many jumping events that were held in Putrajaya, such as the 62 Kibaran Jalur Gemilang jump, the Putrajaya 25th silver anniversary jump, the Putrajaya international hot air balloon and the Putrajaya BASE 2020 jump,” he said.

Tengku Aina said that PPj also expressed his deepest condolences to Azuan’s family. – Bernama
