New Year’s tragedy: 4WD vehicle falls off Triso ferry ramp, 9 passengers believed to have drowned

KUCHING (Jan 1): A van loaded with passengers fell into the Batang Lupar River, and everyone on board is believed to have died after it fell off a Triso ferry ramp today.

According to initial reports, the victims are a family involving several children and their identities have not yet been released at the time of writing.

A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department said they received a distress call about the incident around 3:14 p.m.

The spokesman said fire and rescue teams were dispatched from Saratok and Simunjan stations to carry out a rescue operation.

A live video from Facebook showing the aftermath of the incident has gone viral on social media.

“Through the live video of Facebook account owner Dyg Junailah Leyent, the public managed to recover nine bodies with the help of a ferry and an excavator.

The seven-minute, 15-second video showed scenes of several men and women, including young children, unconscious while CPR was performed on some of them.

The Fire and Rescue Department is still conducting a Search and Rescue (SAR) operation at the time of writing.
