SIBU: A baby is among nine people believed to have died when a four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle sank in the Batang Lupar River after falling from a Triso ferry on Friday (January 1).

The nine, five men and four women, also included several children.

The victims had not yet been identified but were said to be from Kapit.

They were on their way to send their children to a religious school in Kuching.

The state Fire and Rescue Department said the incident took place around 3:15 p.m. and was recorded on video by a member of the public at the scene.

The video later went viral on social media.

“The seven-minute video showed members of the public jumping into the water to remove the victims from the vehicle.

“They had also performed CPR,” the department said.

Upon receiving a distress call, the department dispatched two fire crews from the Saratok and Simunjan stations.

At 6 in the afternoon, they are still on their way due to the great distance of the place.

Saratok is about 98 km from the scene, while Simunjan is about 62 km away.
