PETALIZING JAYA: Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad is no longer the president of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), as he resigned on February 24, despite the party’s decision to reject his resignation.

Its chief information officer, Dr. Radzi Jidin (pix), explained that there are no provisions within the party constitution that allow the supreme council to return the presidency to a person who has resigned from office.

“Yes, the Supreme Council meeting on February 24 rejected Mahathir’s resignation. However, after reviewing our constitution, there is no mention that the council can return the office of president to the incumbent who had resigned.

“This matter is beyond the power of the supreme council,” he said in a statement today.

Radzi said that as such, according to the party’s constitution, its chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will take over as acting president, until the party’s next election.

“During that period, the acting president may fulfill the duty of the president, as stipulated in Clause 16.2 of the constitution.

“As Mahathir resigned on February 24, Muhyiddin will hold the presidency until the elections are held,” he said.

Although a date for the party’s elections has not yet been announced, Mahathir is the only candidate for the office of president. Muhyiddin, meanwhile, will defend his presidency against Mahathir’s son, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir.

Mahathir had resigned on February 24 as president of Bersatu and as prime minister, amid intense political maneuvers that ultimately saw the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government.

Radzi said that all party members, including its main leaders, are subject to the rights and responsibility enshrined in its constitution.

“No member or leader has powers beyond the constitution. In other words, nobody has absolute power in the party, “he said.

“If there is any division in opinion, consult the constitution, which provides us with guidance to carry out our mandate as a member and run the party smoothly,” he added.

Radzi also urged all members to give their full support to Muhyiddin, who is also the Prime Minister, in his effort to combat the Covid-19 crisis and subsequently push the country’s economy forward.
