Couple accused of using halal logo without authorization

JOHOR BARU: Two directors of a meat supplier company, who are also husband and wife, have been charged with two counts in a Court of Sessions here for allegedly using the halal logo without the approval of the authorities.

Rahman Sheikh Abdullah, 44, and his wife Raihanah Kasim, 42, pleaded not guilty before Sessions judge, Mohamad Haidar Abdul Aziz, yesterday.

According to the charge sheet, Raihanah Cold Storage Sdn Bhd was charged with using the halal logo on his truck despite not having the approval to do so.

This is alleged to have happened at the company premises along Jalan Perniagaan Setia 6 in Taman Perniagaan Setia here around 1pm on December 1.

The offense was included in paragraph 8 (a) of the Commercial Description (Halal Certification and Marking) Order of 2011.

This carries a fine of no more than RM200,000.

For the second count, Rahman and Raihanah, who are directors of Raihanah Enterprise, were charged with the same crime at the same time and place, but in a different truck. he can be sentenced under Paragraph 8 (B) of the same Order, which is read together with Article 34 of the Penal Code.

It carries a fine not to exceed RM100,000 or imprisonment not more than three years or both, while for repeat offenders, the fine is not more than RM250,000 or a jail term of not more than five years or both in the moment of conviction.

Mohamad Haidar set January 19, 2021 for the next mention of the case. He posted a bond of RM40,000 with a bond for each of the two defendants.

They paid bail.

The deputy prosecutor was T. Ashvinii from the Ministry of Internal Trade and Consumer Affairs, while lawyers Noor Liana Hashim and Lau Kok Guan represented the defendants.
