Demo: How good is the night video mode on the Mi 11?

The Xiaomi Mi 11 is quite an extraordinary phone, with the praise of being the first smartphone to be powered by Qualcomm’s latest flagship processor, the Snapdragon 888. Now, we haven’t had a chance to test the Mi 11’s night video mode in person, but the folks at BlinkAI have released two demo videos showing the new feature of the phone. From what we can see, the results are quite impressive:

Of course, demo videos, particularly those that are posted by companies that developed the technology shown, can sometimes be skewed to highlight strengths. However, you can’t deny that the night video mode seems to work very well in low-light situations, adding brightness and detail to the shot without generating too much noise. In the clip above, I didn’t even notice the tree to the right of the frame until night mode was enabled.

What is special about the night video mode on the Mi 11?

According to BlinkAI, this is the first time that this particular AI technology has been used in a smartphone. Furthermore, Dr. Bo Zhu, co-founder and CTO of BlinkAI, explains that the night video mode of the Mi 11 is “fundamentally different” from the night modes of other smartphones. AI image enhancement software is based on a neural network framework, supposedly emulating “critical aspects” of the human visual system. This purportedly brings the efficiency of “biological visual processing” to cameras, with the NPU in the Snapdragon 888 enabling “exceptional inference speed and imaging performance at ultra-low power.”

Does this mean we will see a similar feature on other phones in 2021? Maybe. The Snapdragon 888 is Qualcomm’s latest flagship chipset, which means it will likely power most premium Android smartphones in 2021. For now, the Mi 11 is the only smartphone with BlinkAI technology under the hood, so This adds to an already impressive list of features from Xiaomi’s latest stab at the flagship smartphone market.
