PUTRAJAYA: The Health Ministry wanted to implement a full motion control order regime to control a third wave of Covid-19 infections, Chief Health Officer Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said today.
However, a conditional motion control order was implemented due to the “huge impact the MCO would have had on the economy,” he said.
Noor Hisham said that the conditional motion control order had successfully slowed the spread of Covid-19 infections. Without it, some four million Malaysians were expected to have been infected with the virus.
“Today, we only see about 106,000 reported cases so far,” he said at his daily press conference on Covid-19.
Noor Hisham said that the implementation of the MCO (March 18 to May 4) was very successful in terms of reducing the infection rate. However, it had a very big impact on the economy.
“During this third wave, the Ministry of Health (actually) wanted to implement the MCO, but due to the huge impact it would have on the economy, we have implemented the CMCO,” he said.
He reminded people that they must continue to adhere to hygiene and safety standards to ensure that the infection rate is kept under control. If people continue to comply, the number of daily positive cases in the country could drop in the next three weeks.
